Rice bran oil Extraction..

Rice bran oil is extracted from the outer layer of rice grain (rice bran) that is removed during milling. The process can be done industrially or in a small-scale setup. Here is a clear explanation of how it’s made.

1️⃣ Raw Material Preparation

  • Rice grains are milled to produce rice bran (the brown outer layer).

  • The bran must be stabilized quickly because natural enzymes can spoil the oil.

  • Stabilization is usually done by heating the bran (100–120°C for a few minutes).

2️⃣ Oil Extraction Methods

A. Mechanical Press Method (Small Scale)

  1. Dry the rice bran to reduce moisture.

  2. Put the bran in an oil expeller machine.

  3. The machine presses the bran and squeezes out the oil.

  4. Filter the oil to remove solid particles.

Result:

  • Crude rice bran oil

  • Remaining material is rice bran cake (used as animal feed).

B. Solvent Extraction Method (Industrial)

This method gives higher oil yield.

Steps:

  1. Rice bran is placed in an extractor.

  2. A solvent (usually hexane) is added to dissolve the oil.

  3. The mixture is heated to separate the solvent from oil.

  4. Solvent is recovered and reused.

Result:

  • Crude rice bran oil

  • Defatted rice bran meal

3️⃣ Oil Refining Process

Crude oil cannot be used directly. It is refined using these steps:

  1. Degumming – removes gums and phospholipids

  2. Neutralization – removes free fatty acids

  3. Bleaching – removes color pigments

  4. Deodorization – removes odor

After refining you get clear edible rice bran oil.

4️⃣ Final Product

Refined rice bran oil is used for:

  • Cooking and frying

  • Food processing

  • Cosmetics and soaps

It is popular because it contains antioxidants like oryzanol and has a high smoke point (~232°C).
