Button mushroom cultivation

Growing button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) at home is relatively easy if you provide the right environment. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Get the Necessary Materials

What You Need:

Mushroom spawn (button mushroom spores mixed with grain or sawdust)
Growing medium (pasteurized compost, manure, or straw)
Growing trays or containers (wooden, plastic, or metal)
Spray bottle for misting
Dark, humid, and cool space (ideal temperature: 18-22°C / 64-72°F)

2. Prepare the Growing Medium

๐ŸŒฑ Option 1: Compost-Based (Best for Nutrients)

  • Use a mix of straw, gypsum, and chicken or horse manure.
  • Pasteurize it by heating it to 60°C (140°F) for 2 hours to kill unwanted bacteria.

๐ŸŒฟ Option 2: Straw-Based (Simpler Method)

  • Cut straw into small pieces and soak in hot water for 30-60 minutes to sterilize.
  • Drain excess water before use.

3. Inoculate the Mushroom Spawn

  • Spread the mushroom spawn evenly over the prepared compost/straw in the growing trays.
  • Gently mix it into the top 1-2 inches of the substrate.
  • Cover with a moist cloth or plastic sheet to retain humidity.

4. Create the Ideal Growing Environment

Temperature: Keep between 18-22°C (64-72°F).
Humidity: Maintain 80-90% humidity by misting water regularly.
Darkness: Place the setup in a dark room (like a basement or cupboard).
Airflow: Ensure fresh air circulation but avoid direct wind.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Spawn Run (First 10-14 Days): The mycelium (white fungal threads) will spread through the compost. Keep it warm and moist but avoid overwatering.

5. Casing Layer (After Mycelium Growth)

  • Once mycelium fully covers the compost (white web-like appearance), add a thin layer (1-2 cm) of moist soil or peat moss mixed with lime.
  • This helps in fruiting (mushroom formation).
  • Maintain high humidity by misting daily.

6. Mushroom Growth & Harvesting

๐Ÿ„ After 2-3 weeks, small mushrooms (pins) will appear. Keep the humidity high and avoid direct sunlight.
๐Ÿฝ Harvest when mushrooms are 2-3 inches in diameter by gently twisting them off.
๐Ÿ” Mushrooms will regrow in flushes every 7-10 days for 2-3 months!

7. Common Problems & Solutions

Mold Growth? – Improve airflow and avoid overwatering.
No Mushrooms? – Check temperature and moisture levels.
Small Mushrooms? – Ensure proper nutrients and remove old mushrooms to encourage new growth.
